In late June, summer associates from the New York, Los Angeles and Palo Alto offices traveled to WilmerHale's Washington DC office. And what a cool, glass ship it was, complete with a gym, snazzy cafeteria, contemporary art and terraces with views of the White House.

Our two days in the DC summer associate training program spanned everything from networking to learning about the finances of a law firm. We got to hear from Norma Edmiston, the firm's CFO, Susan Murley and Bob Novick, the co-managing partners, as well as Seth Waxman, chair of the firm's Appellate Practice Group. Getting a sense of the firm's leadership and management structure is important, perhaps even more so when you're a summer associate and have less control and less insight into management decisions. You need to be assured that the ship is being steered by good people.

And indeed we were assured and inspired by our ship captains.
