Known for his judgment, his integrity and his “indefinable distinction” as a trial lawyer, Jim St. Clair is best remembered for his assistance to Joe Welch at the Army-McCarthy hearings in 1954, and—20 years later—for his role as Special Counsel to President Nixon during the Watergate controversy. With his passionate belief in “a client, not a cause,” St. Clair earned acclaim for his willingness to take on matters across the ideological spectrum, including those described by The Boston Globe as “some of the most politically and socially polarizing cases of the century.” In honor of St. Clair’s legacy, one of the firm’s community service partner organizations—Discovering Justice: The James D. St. Clair Court Education Project—now bears his name.
