WilmerHale

How To Apply

Hiring Criteria

Many of our lawyers join our firm right out of law school or a judicial clerkship. The firm seeks to hire students and clerks whose academic and personal record of achievement demonstrates a commitment to excellence and typically the students we hire are at or near the top of their class. In addition, we are looking for individuals whose character, intelligence, judgment and training will inspire their colleagues and clients to have confidence in their advice and representation. We also attempt to hire a diverse group of lawyers because we believe our firm and our clients benefit from that diversity.

WilmerHale is an equal opportunity employer and committed to fostering a diverse workforce. It is our policy to administer all personnel actions including recruiting, hiring, training, and promoting employees without regard to race, color, ethnicity, religion, creed, age, marital status, veteran or military status, gender, national origin, ancestry, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, genetic information or predisposing characteristics, medical condition or disability or any other protected status under applicable federal, state or local law. Consistent with the obligations of these laws, WilmerHale will make reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities. In addition, WilmerHale has implemented an Affirmative Action Program designed to support its Equal Employment Opportunity Policy.

Hiring Process

Law Students

The firm relies heavily on on-campus recruiting for its associates. Please refer to our on-campus interview schedule for a list of the schools where we will be interviewing. If we are interviewing at your law school, please submit your resume and law school transcript to your career placement office. If you are not granted an interview or if you attend a law school where we do not conduct on-campus interviews and would like to apply to us, please send a resume, cover letter, law school transcript and a list of references to the appropriate contact within our Talent Department. If you decide you are interested in one of our other offices, please let our on-campus interviewers know when you meet with them.

Judicial Clerks

If you are currently clerking for a judge, please check with your judge about the appropriate time to interview with us. Please keep us informed of your judge’s policies and let us know if there are any WilmerHale matters currently before your judge. To apply for an associate position, please send a resume, cover letter and law school transcript to the appropriate contact within our Talent Department. We do not accept judicial clerk resumes from legal search firms and will not pay a fee to legal search firms that forward resumes of judicial clerks.

Office Interviews

If you are invited to the firm to interview, you will be asked to contact our Talent Department to schedule a mutually convenient in-office interview date. Call-back interviews consist of a half-day visit, either morning (including lunch) or afternoon. Typically, you will meet with four to six attorneys for approximately thirty minutes each. If you are interested in particular practice areas or if you have questions that might be best addressed by particular lawyers—for example, parents, women lawyers, lawyers of color, openly gay lawyers, or newly arrived lawyers—please let us know. We will make every effort to accommodate your request.

Travel Reimbursement

Out-of-town law students:

If the firm interviews you on-campus and invites you back to the office, we will reimburse you for your interview expenses or share them with other firms. Reimbursable expenses include reasonable air and train fare, ground transportation, hotel accommodations and reasonable cost of meals. For automobile travel, we will reimburse your mileage, tolls and parking fees. For more specific information, please contact our Talent Department. We do not reimburse candidates for “prescreening” interviews.

Travel reimbursement form:

Either prior to or during your visit to our office, you will receive an interview packet that contains a travel reimbursement form on which you should list your out-of-pocket expenses. Please provide all receipts when submitting your request for reimbursement.
