Bonuses
In allocating bonuses, we strive to recognize lawyers whose contributions go beyond the ordinary and to allow our lawyers to share in the firm’s economic success. The bonus system for offices other than New York is based on four components:
- Overall firm performance.
- The individual associate or counsel's total client hours (paying client plus pro bono) for the year. Total client hours will be the primary criterion on which individual bonuses will be based, taking into account the firm's standards for quality of work.
- The individual associate or counsel's seniority. It is our expectation that bonus levels will generally increase along with seniority.
- Any outstanding contributions to non-client work or the life of the firm by the individual associate or counsel, as well as extraordinary substantive performance by the individual associate or counsel or, conversely, any notable deficiencies in these areas.
The New York office will continue to have a market-based bonus for all associates and lockstep counsel, but the firm will have the flexibility to make adjustments to the market bonuses at the margins for hours or substantive performance that are exceptionally high or exceptionally low.
